Trump avoids directly answering the question about the Capitol riot on January 6
In a recent exchange focused on the transfer of power in democracy, former President Trump was directly asked, “Is there anything you regret about January 6?” Trump initially responded by stating that he only told people to act “peacefully and patriotically.” He began speaking in plural but quickly corrected himself, saying, “We didn’t… This group of people has been treated very poorly.”
He then shifted to his well-known and frequently repeated rhetoric on immigration. The moderator interrupted him, saying, “It’s a very simple question. Do you regret anything about January 6?”
Once again, Trump evaded the question, comparing the Capitol rioters to the alleged millions of criminal migrants committing crimes in the U.S. and to the protesters in Minneapolis following George Floyd’s death. After further insistence from the moderator, Trump blamed Nancy Pelosi for not accepting federal forces that he claimed to have offered.
In her response, Kamala Harris provided a personal account: “I was at the Capitol on January 6. And that day, the President of the United States incited a violent mob to desecrate the capital of our nation. On that day, 140 law enforcement officers were injured, and some lost their lives. The former president has been indicted and tried for that reason.” She also recalled the far-right march in Charlottesville in 2017 and Trump’s comments at that time.
Ultimately, after an exchange of repetitive responses, Trump invited Kamala Harris to go to Washington at that moment to sign a law that would completely close the border.
