President Trump welcomed Marc Fogel to the White House on Tuesday evening, celebrating Fogel’s recent release from a Russian prison after two years of unjust detention. Fogel, a 63-year-old teacher, was arrested in August 2021 for possession of medical marijuana, a matter that escalated into his imprisonment in Russia.
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz confirmed that Fogel’s release came as part of a negotiation with the Russian government, indicating that it was an “exchange.” Following the release, Trump’s Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, traveled to Russia to facilitate Fogel’s safe return to the United States.
Fogel’s family expressed immense relief and gratitude for his release. His sister, Anne Fogel, shared that their 95-year-old mother, Malphine Fogel, had persistently advocated for her son’s freedom, even discussing his situation directly with Trump during his campaign trail. “He was true to his word,” she remarked, emphasizing Trump’s commitment to securing Marc’s release.
Fogel had previously been overlooked during earlier prisoner swaps, but designation as “unjustly detained” by the State Department last year added urgency to his case. While details of the arrangement with Russia remain unclear, Waltz remarked that Fogel’s release could signify a step forward in diplomatic relations, especially in light of ongoing tensions regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
The Fogel family expressed their heartfelt thanks to Trump, stating, “We are beyond grateful, relieved and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband, and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home.”
Additionally, Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted the ongoing plight of many Americans still held in Russia, reaffirming Trump’s commitment to addressing these cases. This development marks a hopeful moment for families of detained individuals, as it illustrates the potential for diplomatic resolutions and renewed efforts to bring their loved ones home.
