Trump Announces Anti-Abortion Running Mate: Impact on Reproductive Rights Revealed

For Immediate Release: Monday, July 15, 2024

Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Trump Choosing Sen. J. D. Vance as Pick for Vice President

Washington, DC — Today, Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, announced Republican Ohio Senator J. D. Vance as his running mate for his 2024 presidential campaign.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju issued the following statement in response:

“Donald Trump’s selection of J. D. Vance as his vice-presidential candidate confirms that a Trump administration will go to great lengths to ban all abortion. Trump chose Vance because of his strong anti-abortion stance. A Trump-Vance administration would be the most dangerous for abortion and reproductive freedom in American history. We must re-elect President Biden and Vice President Harris to restore our rights and protect our democracy.”

Vance has consistently aligned with extremist Republicans in the Senate to undermine reproductive freedom and has supported dangerous abortion bans and restrictions proposed by his party.

Vance has expressed support for a national abortion ban. During his time in Congress, he has consistently received a 0% rating from Reproductive Freedom for All’s congressional record.

When the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Vance used “personhood” language to advocate for federal policies on abortion. This application of language could potentially outlaw all abortions and some forms of contraception and fertility treatments such as IVF.

Recently, Vance voted with Senate Republicans to block a bill aimed at protecting abortion rights and access following the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization and opposed efforts to safeguard the right to IVF.

A second Trump presidency would present Donald Trump with another chance to severely undermine fundamental rights. Anti-abortion groups, who collaborated with Trump in his previous administration to overturn Roe and restrict reproductive freedom, have partnered with over 140 former Trump administration officials to create an extensive agenda that could be implemented from Day One of his administration. This plan includes reviving the domestic gag rule, using the Federal Trade Commission to penalize and prosecute virtual clinics prescribing abortion pills in states with bans, misinterpreting the antiquated Comstock Act to block access to abortion pills and medical equipment used for abortion services, and rescinding all the policies enacted by the Biden-Harris administration that expanded abortion access.
