Troy Volleyball Targets Sun Belt Championship Clash with Marshall

TROY, Ala. – The Troy Volleyball team is gearing up for the 2025 Sun Belt Championship, facing off against Marshall on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. at the Foley Events Center. Troy secured the No. 4 seed in the West division, bolstered by two recent wins over Southern Miss on November 7 and 8. Marshall, entering the postseason as the No. 5 seed in the East division, looks to turn their fortunes around after a rocky end to the regular season.

Troy is peaking at the right time, having won four of its last five matches, including an impressive four-match winning streak. They split the series against App State in their final regular-season contests, with an outstanding five-set victory on Friday. In that match, Troy made history by recording 17 aces, setting a new program record. Senior Amiah Butler shone brightly, contributing 26 kills and earning a spot on the All-Sun Belt First Team earlier this week.

Currently, Marshall enters the tournament with a 7-9 record in the conference, having faced back-to-back defeats against Southern Miss. Historically, Troy has dominated the matchup against Marshall, boasting a perfect 5-0 record in previous encounters.

In individual accolades, Amiah Butler received her first Sun Belt end-of-season award by being named to the All-Sun Belt First Team. She has had an exceptional season, finishing second in the Sun Belt for kills per set with an average of 4.60. Notably, her career average of 3.60 kills per set ranks third all-time in Troy history, while she currently sits seventh in total kills.

The Sun Belt Championship has seen mixed success for Troy under head coach Josh Lauer, who holds a 6-8 record in such matches. Last season, the Trojans faced an early exit in the first round, falling to Georgia State, the No. 5 seed from the East division, in a gripping five-set match.

As they prepare to face Marshall for the sixth time, with the Trojans leading their series, the team is poised to make a strong statement in the championship. Marshall currently holds a 15-14 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the Sun Belt. Key players for the Thundering Herd include Emma Barnett, who has accumulated 319 kills this season, and Bella Thompson, who has been pivotal in setting up plays with 712 assists.

With a combination of historical success and current momentum, Troy is looking forward to a spirited match against Marshall as they strive for success in the Sun Belt Championship.
