WILMINGTON, N.C. – Flood watches have been issued for several counties in the Cape Fear region in anticipation of Tropical Storm Chantal’s impact as it approaches the South Carolina coast.
Brunswick and Columbus counties are currently under a flood watch, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). They warn that flash flooding could result from excessive rainfall, with potential impacts including significant runoff that may lead to flooding in rivers, creeks, and streams. Residents can expect ponding on roadways as heavy rain is forecasted to begin late Saturday night and continue throughout Sunday.
Additionally, New Hanover County is under a coastal flood advisory, with forecasts indicating up to six inches of flooding above ground level in low-lying areas, particularly near shorelines and tidal waterways. This coastal flooding is expected to affect areas close to the lower Cape Fear River, including parts of downtown Wilmington.
The coastal flooding advisory for New Hanover County will remain in effect until 9 p.m., while the flood watch for Brunswick and Columbus counties is set to last through Monday evening.
Residents are advised to exercise caution while driving and to avoid areas with flooded or barricaded roads.
