Trinity Rodman, a forward for the United States women’s national soccer team, has opened up about her challenging relationship with her father, former NBA star Dennis Rodman. During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast with host Alex Cooper, she expressed that her father has been largely absent from her life, stating, “He’s not a dad. Maybe by blood, but nothing else.”
These sentiments are consistent with what Trinity conveyed in an interview with ESPN’s Charlotte Gibson in June 2022. Growing up, her mother, Michelle Moyer, attempted to protect Trinity and her brother, DJ Rodman, from the tumultuous lifestyle associated with their father. The couple divorced in 2012.
Despite experiencing a successful summer at the Paris Olympics, where she earned a gold medal, Trinity’s relationship with Dennis remains strained. In response to his daughter’s comments, Dennis took to Instagram, expressing remorse for not being the father she wished for and affirming his commitment to keep trying. He stated, “I’m always here… I always had one wish and it was I wish my kids would call me and come see me.”
Trinity recounted a particularly emotional moment when Dennis unexpectedly attended a playoff game for her team, the Washington Spirit, in 2021. She described feeling confused and hurt by his sudden appearance, as it seemed insincere, suggesting he might have been seeking attention rather than supporting her genuinely. “Even at that game, I don’t think it was for me; I think he wanted to have a good conscience,” she said. After that game, she did not speak to him again until after the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Despite these familial struggles, Trinity Rodman has demonstrated resilience, continuing to excel in her soccer career. She won a title with the Spirit and was named NWSL Rookie of the Year. Though the Spirit faced disappointment in the 2024 NWSL Championship game, Rodman’s achievements highlight her determination and talent.
This narrative, while poignant, reflects the complexities of family dynamics, particularly in the public eye. Trinity’s openness about her experiences can serve as an encouragement for others navigating similar challenges, showcasing that personal strength and success can arise from difficult circumstances.
