The athletics community in Fiji and Oceania is grieving the loss of Joseph Rodan Junior, affectionately known as JJ, who passed away at his residence in Lami on Tuesday. Former Pacific sprint champion Jone Delai paid homage to JJ, emphasizing his dedication as a coach, respected administrator, and a passionate advocate for sports. Delai reflected on JJ’s commitment to athletics, stating he was disciplined and always eager to help nurture young athletes.

The Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) joined in expressing sorrow over JJ’s death, honoring him as a national and international representative athlete, leader, and strong supporter of sports. The OAA highlighted the significant influence JJ had on athletics, which extended far beyond local borders.

JJ had a storied athletic career, representing Fiji at two Commonwealth Games in 1998 and 2002, alongside competing in numerous South Pacific Games, Mini Games, Oceania Championships, and Australian Championships. He was a remarkable three-time gold medalist in decathlon and made history as the youngest male to achieve gold in the event at the South Pacific Games at just 17 years old. His competitive excellence also included national records in pole vault and hurdles, as well as holding the Oceania Area 50-metre Hurdles Indoor record.

Beyond his personal achievements, JJ was dedicated to promoting athletics in Fiji and the broader Oceania region. He worked as the Chief Development Officer and Interim Vice-President of Athletics Fiji, managed national teams, and played a pivotal role in securing significant sponsorships for the sport. JJ founded the Trailblazers Athletics Club and was deeply involved in youth development programs, contributing to modernizing governance and strategic planning for Athletics Fiji.

His commitment to expanding opportunities for athletes and coaches across the Pacific was further exemplified by his tenure on the Oceania Athletics Association Council from 2019 to 2023, where he chaired the Development Commission. In recognition of his service, he received the Oceania Athletics Association Merit Award in 2016 and was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 2019. JJ also served as Fiji’s team manager at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast and the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa.

Oceania Athletics Association President Robin Sapong Eugenio remarked on JJ’s enduring contributions, stating that his dedication and support for athletes would always be remembered. JJ’s legacy will continue through the many athletes he inspired and the programs he helped establish, serving as a testament to his generosity and commitment to the sport he cherished.
