Tributes pour in as Fiji netball mourns icon Unaisi Rokoura

Netball Fiji is in mourning following the heartbreaking loss of Unaisi Rokoura, fondly known as Una, who tragically drowned over the weekend. A celebrated athlete and former captain of the Fiji Pearls, Rokoura was recognized for her exceptional contributions to Fijian sports, first representing the national netball team at the young age of 17.

Rokoura’s career spanned numerous prestigious events, including six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, during which she captained the Pearls from 1997 to 2006. Her athletic prowess extended beyond netball; she excelled in hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball, earning her a reputation as one of Fiji’s most versatile athletes.

Netball Fiji President RubyAnn Sorovaki expressed profound sadness over the loss, reflecting on Rokoura’s significant impact as an athlete, coach, and mentor. “Her legacy in Fijian and Pacific sport will live on through the many players and colleagues she influenced,” Sorovaki stated, highlighting how Rokoura’s dedication and spirit inspired countless individuals.

Rokoura’s roles within the netball community included positions such as the head coach of the Fiji Pearls from 2009 to 2013 and 2022 to 2024, along with her capacity as Country Coordinator for NetGO Fiji from 2017 to 2022. Additionally, she played a key role in coaching the Papua New Guinea Pepes from 2015 to 2017 and contributed as a fitness instructor at the University of the South Pacific Gym.

Her death came as a shock to her family and the sporting community, with many expressing their condolences, including her father and brother, who mourn her passing alongside a wider network of relatives and friends. Social media has since been filled with tributes, reflecting on Rokoura’s unwavering love for netball and the enthusiasm she brought to the sport.

This tragic incident underscores the importance of water safety, as strong currents in local rivers have posed risks to the community in the past. Authorities are urging families to remain vigilant during water-related activities, emphasizing the necessity of supervision, especially for children.

In honoring Rokoura’s memory, her legacy serves as a reminder of the positive influence one individual can have on a sport and the community. As the netball community unites in grief, they also celebrate the indelible mark she has left on the hearts of many, ensuring that her spirit continues to inspire future generations of athletes.
