At Nationwide Arena, emotions ran high as the Columbus Blue Jackets held a poignant ceremony before their home opener against the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night, in memory of brothers Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, who tragically lost their lives in a DUI-related incident on August 29.
In a show of solidarity, players from both teams wore jerseys bearing Johnny Gaudreau’s number 13 during pregame warm-ups. The ceremony featured Johnny’s widow, Meredith, and his brother-in-law, Eddie, bringing his children, Noa and Johnny, to the center ice, where a banner displaying Gaudreau’s number and the years “1993-2024” was unveiled. The moment moved many to tears, including Meredith, as the Gaudreau family embraced during the banner’s raising.
As fans chanted “Johnny Hockey,” symbolizing their love for the late player, the Blue Jackets honored him by leaving his position empty at puck drop. The game paused for 13 seconds, representing his jersey number, before play resumed.
In a heartfelt video message broadcasted earlier, Meredith expressed gratitude for the community’s support, encouraging fans to celebrate Johnny’s legacy of love for family and the sport. She emphasized the importance of inspiring others and taking joy in the game.
Both brothers’ wives are expecting children, with Meredith sharing her news of a third child at Johnny’s funeral, while Matthew’s wife, Madeline, prepares for the arrival of their first son next month. Madeline recently posted on social media encouraging kindness and gratitude in honor of her late husband and his brother.
The night was filled with tributes to Johnny Gaudreau, whose No. 13 jersey was prominently displayed around the arena, and the team even scheduled the puck drop at 7:13 p.m. to honor him, marking a bittersweet beginning to the season for the Blue Jackets as they remember the brother they lost.
