Former Fiji Pearls midcourt player Alesi Waqa Paul, now residing in Dubai with her husband Keponi Paul, has paid tribute to the late Unaisi Rokoura, a beloved former captain and coach of the Fiji Pearls. Waqa shared her deep gratitude, highlighting the profound impact Rokoura had on her life, both as a coach and a sisterly figure.
“Coach Una was my guide, my strength when I was weak, and a true sister at heart,” Waqa expressed. She recalled a particularly trying period during the 2018 Commonwealth Games when she sustained a knee injury. Faced with the difficult reality of not having insurance for the necessary surgery, Waqa felt despondent until Rokoura stepped in to support her. Rokoura assisted her through daily rehabilitation, instilling hope at a time Waqa nearly lost it.
Beyond coaching, Waqa credited Rokoura’s kindness with being a pivotal influence in her life. In 2019, following her departure from the Fiji Police Force and navigating personal challenges, Rokoura recognized Waqa’s potential and offered her a coaching development role at Netball New Zealand. Waqa believes this opportunity was crucial in allowing her to rebuild her life, showcasing Rokoura’s talent for uplifting and inspiring those around her.
Rokoura’s legacy is characterized by her compassionate spirit and dedicated leadership, both as a player and a coach. Her passing is profoundly felt not only by her family and friends but also by the entire Fiji netball community. Fiji Netball President RubyAnn Sorovaki had previously expressed the deep sorrow experienced within the organization due to the loss of such a remarkable individual, emphasizing the significant impact Rokoura had on numerous players and coaches.
Waqa concluded her touching tribute with heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Thank you, Coach Una, for everything you have done for me. You will forever live in my heart. May your beautiful soul rest peacefully in God’s eternal love.” This sentiment captures the wider appreciation within the netball community, highlighting how Rokoura’s legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
