Tribute to a Legend: Remembering Roger A. Cook of ‘This Old House’

Roger A. Cook, the esteemed owner of K&R Tree and Landscape Company and a prominent cast member of “This Old House,” passed away at the age of 70 on August 21, 2024, after a prolonged illness. He was a devoted husband to the late Kathleen E. Cook, who predeceased him on December 1, 2010.

Born in Biddeford, Maine, Roger was the son of Lucienne and Arthur Cook, Jr. His family initially lived in Woburn before settling in Burlington, where he graduated from Burlington High School in 1972, excelling in varsity basketball and football. While pursuing his education, he gained practical experience in landscaping, which became his lifelong passion. He earned a Bachelor of Science in wildlife management and conservation law from the University of Maine.

In 1982, Roger founded K&R Tree and Landscaping with his wife Kathy, starting with only a jeep, trailer, and lawn mower. Over the next four decades, they built a successful business together, with Kathy managing the administrative side while Roger focused on the landscaping and design aspects.

Roger’s journey on “This Old House” began in 1982 when he first contributed his expertise to the program. By 1988, after working on the Lexington Bed & Breakfast renovation, he became a full-time cast member as the garden and landscape contractor. As a certified landscape contractor in Massachusetts, he held significant roles in various professional organizations, including the Massachusetts Arborist Association, where he served as president of the board of directors.

Despite his widespread recognition—including winning an Emmy Award for lifetime achievement in 2022—Roger remained grounded and approachable. He was known for his kindness and willingness to assist others, whether it involved yard projects or coaching youth basketball. He cherished time spent with family, supporting his children and grandchildren at sporting events, and enjoyed fishing and relaxing at Cape Cod.

Roger and Kathy, who dated after high school, were a remarkable team, instilling strong values and work ethic in their children while contributing positively to their community. He was dedicated to his family, encouraging his children to pursue their dreams and prioritizing family in times of difficulty. His pride as a grandfather was evident in his affection for his three grandsons.

In his later years, Roger faced challenges due to his illness but remained committed to maintaining a sense of normalcy for his family. He received love and support from his children, extended family, and friends during this time.

He is survived by his children, Jason and Molly; three grandsons, Peter, Noah, and James; his brother Greg; and several in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Visitation will take place on Tuesday, August 27th, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that individuals plant a tree in their local community to honor Roger’s lifelong commitment to the environment.
