Members of the Australian and New Zealand Netball Women’s Team honored the memory of Unaisi Rokoura, the late former Fiji Netball captain and coach, by wearing black armbands during their second Constellation Cup match last Friday. This emotional tribute followed the tragic events surrounding Rokoura, who was reported missing after being swept away by strong currents while foraging for kai (freshwater mussels) in the Rewa River.
After an extensive search, her body was discovered three days later near the Waila dredging plant. Unaisi Rokoura, affectionately referred to as Una, was a highly respected athlete whose legacy in netball and other sports is profound. She began her illustrious career with the Fiji Pearls at the tender age of 17 and represented Fiji in six Pacific Games, two Commonwealth Games, and two Netball World Championships, captaining the Pearls from 1997 to 2006.
Rokoura’s dedication extended beyond netball; she was a versatile athlete excelling in hockey, rugby 15s, basketball, and beach volleyball. Her contributions to sports continued through coaching, guiding the Fiji Pearls from 2009 to 2013 and then again from 2022 to 2024.
The netball community has been deeply affected by her passing, prompting significant reflections on her impact as both an athlete and a mentor. Fiji Netball expressed profound sadness, recognizing Rokoura as not only a remarkable player but also as a beloved friend and a vital influence on many young players’ lives. In light of her tragic death, community leaders are rallying for heightened awareness and improvements in water safety, emphasizing the importance of vigilance when engaging in outdoor activities.
