The trial of Karen Read, which was set to take place on Tuesday, has been postponed due to “unavoidable circumstances,” according to a court spokesperson. No further details regarding these circumstances have been disclosed. NBC10 Boston analyst Sue O’Connell is currently seeking more information.

The trial had anticipated the testimony of a new witness following an extensive three days of questioning concerning the death of John O’Keefe from Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Yuri Bukhenik, who led the investigation. During Monday’s session, Read’s defense team introduced video evidence that they claim could support their theory of a third-party being responsible for O’Keefe’s death.

Read’s attorneys have pointed fingers at ATF agent Brian Higgins, suggesting he may be involved. Crucial moments in the trial included a cross-examination of Bukhenik where flirtatious text messages between Higgins and Read were presented, hinting at a potentially intimate relationship that included a romantic kiss.

On the evening prior to O’Keefe being found unresponsive in the snow, Higgins was reportedly present at the same residence. The defense displayed video evidence of him at the Canton Police Department around 1:30 a.m. that morning, where he mentioned being engaged in moving vehicles, sparking further inquiries into his actions.

Bukhenik also faced scrutiny regarding Michael Proctor, a former trooper whose handling of the investigation was deemed unprofessional, particularly after disparaging text messages about Read emerged. These texts highlighted a concerning atmosphere among investigators.

Furthermore, the prosecution has sought to introduce evidence regarding a trip taken by Read and O’Keefe to Aruba, which they argue could illustrate strife within their relationship.

As the trial continues to garner attention, it underscores the complexities of legal proceedings and the importance of thorough investigations in seeking justice. Despite the trial’s delay, developments are closely monitored, and both the prosecution and defense are preparing to present their cases with renewed focus.
