Trey Lance had a mixed debut with the Dallas Cowboys, showcasing both promising moments and struggles during the team’s 13-12 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The 24-year-old quarterback gained valuable experience in coach Mike McCarthy’s offense, having previously been acclimating on the sidelines since his trade from the San Francisco 49ers last August.
As a first-round pick in 2021, Lance’s performance on Sunday was closely monitored, especially since he missed the Cowboys’ preseason and spent the regular season as backup to Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush. In this game, he completed 25 of 41 passes for 188 yards without any touchdowns or interceptions, while also rushing six times for 44 yards. His passer rating of 72 was notably lower than his previous performances with the 49ers.
After Rush connected with receiver Jalen Brooks for a 43-yard pass on his sole drive, Lance entered the game during Dallas’ second possession. Throughout his time on the field, the Cowboys’ offense appeared less dynamic compared to Rush’s brief stint.
Lance demonstrated his mobility, including a notable 19-yard run, but struggled at times with accuracy. A missed opportunity came during a fourth-and-goal situation when he failed to connect with wide receiver Jalen Cropper. Cropper was open in the end zone, but Lance’s pass fell just out of reach, resulting in a turnover on downs.
Despite the ups and downs, Lance did find some rhythm during a drive in the fourth quarter, completing four consecutive passes, including a crucial third-and-9 conversion and a 26-yard gain that showcased receiver Kelvin Harmon’s impressive catch.
Although Lance did not lead the Cowboys into the end zone during his playing time, he likely has more chances ahead, as both Prescott and Rush are established players. With two preseason games remaining, Lance’s 41 pass attempts could be just the beginning of his efforts to revitalize his NFL career.
