Trevor Story Keeps Red Sox Contract Intact, Declines Free Agency

Trevor Story has opted not to exercise the opt-out clause in his contract with the Boston Red Sox, confirming his commitment to the team through the remaining years of his six-year, $120 million deal. According to reports from MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, Story will continue to receive the $55 million owed to him instead of exploring free agency this winter.

His contract includes a $25 million salary for both the 2026 and 2027 seasons, along with a $5 million buyout of a $25 million club option for 2028. As he approaches his 33rd birthday, Story’s decision reflects a choice for stability and a secure financial future, especially following an uneven start to his tenure with the Red Sox.

Story’s initial three seasons in Boston were marred by injuries, limiting him to just 163 games and resulting in disappointing offensive numbers—hitting .232 with a .296 on-base percentage over 670 plate appearances. However, the 2025 season marked a significant turnaround for the shortstop. He played in 157 games and achieved a batting line of .263/.308/.433, hitting 25 home runs while also setting a career high with 31 stolen bases.

While Story’s performance this past season signifies a comeback, it was not without its challenges. He struggled to begin the year before becoming more productive after the first two months. Despite an average offensive output, his defensive metrics took a noticeable decline, recording -7 Defensive Runs Saved and -9 Outs Above Average. These figures likely weighed on Story’s decision as he and his agents at Wasserman navigated the complexities of the opt-out.

Given the current free agency landscape, with a shortage of elite shortstop talent, Story opted to stay with the Red Sox rather than risk testing the market. He may have also reflected on the circumstances surrounding his previous free agency, which was impacted by a lockout that delayed his signing with Boston in 2022.

With Story’s commitment, the Red Sox maintain a key part of their infield setup for the 2026 season. Meanwhile, uncertainty remains at third base following Alex Bregman’s decision to opt out of his contract. There are also ongoing discussions regarding second base and potential upgrades at first base, especially with Triston Casas coming back from a challenging season marred by injuries.

Story’s stability adds reassurance to the Red Sox’s infield plans as they look ahead, creating a foundation amidst uncertainty in other positions.
