Trevon Diggs is set to reunite with former Dallas Cowboys teammate Micah Parsons, as he officially joins the Green Bay Packers following his release from the Cowboys. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Diggs signed with the Packers after Dallas let him go, a decision attributed to various factors by head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Diggs’ release comes just two years after he signed a lucrative five-year, $97 million extension with the Cowboys. By claiming Diggs off waivers, the Packers will inherit his existing contract, which no longer has any guaranteed money. This means Green Bay is responsible for only one week’s salary of $472,000, plus an additional $58,823 if he is active for the Packers’ upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings. Had Diggs cleared waivers, he would have entered free agency.
This acquisition arrives as a hopeful boost for the Packers as they seek to strengthen their defense during the postseason. Diggs played alongside Parsons for four of his five years in Dallas and the two share a close friendship, a bond highlighted by Parsons’ support for Diggs amid recent challenges.
Parsons himself will not be on the field for the rest of the season due to a torn ACL incurred in a Week 15 loss to the Denver Broncos. The star edge rusher had recorded 12.5 sacks in 14 games before his injury, marking his first season with the Packers after a controversial trade from the Cowboys that involved multiple assets, including three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark.
Regarding the Cowboys’ management of Diggs’ injuries earlier this season, Parsons had voiced his concerns, stating that he felt his teammate was not adequately treated during his recovery from a significant knee injury. This included placing Diggs on injured reserve while he was still dealing with issues stemming from a prior concussion and his ongoing knee rehabilitation.
After returning to the field in Week 16, despite the Cowboys being eliminated from playoff contention, Diggs put forth a commendable effort, although he struggled defensively in their last game against the Los Angeles Chargers. His sudden release seemed to arise from various factors, including performance issues and alleged discord with the Cowboys’ defensive strategies, particularly regarding the team’s approach to man-to-man coverage.
As Diggs transitions to the Packers, he may find a renewed opportunity to leverage his skills on the field, filling a gap left by injured cornerbacks Nate Hobbs and Kamal Hadden. His addition to the roster comes at a pivotal time, and both the team and fans may be hopeful that he can return to form and contribute significantly as the Packers aim for a successful postseason run.
