Trent Williams Ends Holdout: What’s Next for the 49ers?

SANTA CLARA — All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams has concluded his contract holdout and has reported back to the San Francisco 49ers to finalize a new agreement.

Williams’ agency, Elite Loyalty Sports, announced on social media Tuesday that he is set to rejoin the team just six days before their season opener against the New York Jets.

Williams had been at home in Texas throughout training camp while negotiating for a new deal, resulting in over $5 million in mandatory fines for missing camp and three preseason games. However, a new contract appears to be in the works, allowing the 49ers to resolve two significant contract disputes prior to the start of the season. San Francisco recently signed star receiver Brandon Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million extension last Thursday, successfully ending his own contract hold-in.

These developments indicate that the 49ers will retain nearly all key players from last season’s standout offense as they head into the 2024 season. The only players absent, who logged at least 200 snaps on offense last year, will be fill-in guard Jon Feliciano, backup tight end Charlie Woerner, and fourth receiver Ray-Ray McCloud.

Welcoming Williams back is particularly crucial, as he is considered one of the most vital components of the star-studded roster.

The 36-year-old Williams was due to earn $20.05 million this season as part of the six-year, $138.1 million contract he signed in 2021, but he is now poised to secure a new deal that will replace the final three years of his existing contract. Since he signed his initial deal, several offensive linemen, including Tristan Wirfs, Penei Sewell, and Christian Darrisaw, have signed contracts exceeding an average annual value of $26 million, surpassing Williams’ previous record of just over $23 million.

Significantly recognized as the top offensive lineman in the league in recent years, Williams has earned All-Pro honors as a left tackle for the past three seasons and has played a pivotal role in the 49ers’ offensive success.

The team is set to kick off the season on Monday night against the Jets.
