University of Colorado football standout Travis Hunter delivered an emotional acceptance speech after being honored as the top collegiate player at the Heisman Trophy ceremony held at Lincoln Center in New York City on December 14. The 21-year-old wide receiver and cornerback highlighted his family’s importance, particularly expressing heartfelt gratitude towards his father, Travis Hunter Sr., who was unable to attend.
In an emotional moment, Hunter said, “I want to say something to my father. He’s not here. But I know you’re watching on TV.” As tears filled his eyes, he continued, “Dad, I love you. All the stuff you went through, man. Now, look at your oldest son. I did it for you, man.” He reflected on their shared experiences, acknowledging how much it meant to have his father’s support over the years, from attending his high school games to now watching him perform on national television.
Hunter Sr. chose to let his mother, Shirley Hunter, attend the ceremony in his place, emphasizing the significance of her presence at the event. He expressed his commitment to attend his son’s future milestones, including his wedding and NFL Draft day.
Travis also took time during his speech to thank his mother, Ferrante Edmonds, and his fiancée, Leanna Lenee, for their unwavering support throughout his journey. He described how they stood by him during challenging times, particularly after his surgeries. Hunter credited his mother for removing him from a troubled environment in Florida, placing him on a path to success.
Earlier this year, Hunter delighted his mother by surprising her with a new home, which he passionately showcased on social media. He and Lenee announced their engagement in February and are planning to marry in May 2025.
As a junior, Hunter is projected to enter the 2025 NFL Draft and has continued to shine on the field, receiving first-team All-Big 12 honors as both a defensive back and wide receiver. He is also recognized as the conference’s 2024 Defensive Player of the Year.
Looking ahead, Hunter is expected to compete in the Alamo Bowl on December 28, where his team, Colorado, will face BYU, further solidifying his remarkable collegiate career.
This heartwarming narrative reflects not only Travis Hunter’s personal success but also the strong familial bonds that support and motivate athletes in their journeys. His gratitude towards his family reveals a profound respect for the sacrifices they have made, embodying the spirit of perseverance and love that can inspire others in various walks of life.
