MIAMI — Authorities reported that Cuban reggaeton artist Jose Manuel Carbajal Zadivar, known as El Taiger, is in critical condition following a shooting incident in Miami on Thursday morning.
The shooting was reported shortly after 7 a.m., with police arriving at the scene to find the artist injured inside a black Mercedes SUV near NW 17th St. and 10 Ave. Emergency responders swiftly transported El Taiger to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he is currently on life support.
Manager Macel Reinosa informed CBS News Miami that a person of interest has been identified, whom he claims is familiar with the artist and had made the emergency call to 911. Reinosa expressed doubts about the possibility of suicide, citing the location of the gunshot wound, which was to the front of El Taiger’s head.
On Friday, Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales confirmed that the 37-year-old artist remains hospitalized. He expressed confidence in the police’s ability to uncover the truth behind the incident, describing it as a tragic event that has impacted the South Florida community.
Morales indicated that detectives are diligently gathering evidence but have not identified any suspects at this time. While they are aware of the owner of the SUV in which El Taiger was found, the police are withholding that information to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
He emphasized the importance of not compromising the investigation, stating that if the case is deemed criminal, they wish to ensure the prosecution of those responsible for the incident.
The police are asking anyone with relevant information to reach out to them at (305) 579-6111 or (305) 471-TIPS (8477) to assist in the case.
El Taiger is a prominent figure in the Latin music industry, recognized for his impact on the reggaeton genre, which fuses Caribbean rhythms with urban elements.
A candlelight vigil was held Friday night at the location where El Taiger was shot.
