The tragic recovery of a 26-year-old woman who went missing in Sequoia National Park has brought a somber conclusion to an extensive search operation. Jomarie Calasanz from La Puente, California, was found by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office Swiftwater Dive Rescue Team on July 24th, after disappearing on May 25th when she was swept into the river while spending time with family and friends.

Calasanz’s identity was confirmed by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Coroner’s Office on July 28th. Her disappearance sparked a comprehensive search effort, complicated by hazardous river conditions and difficult terrain.

Superintendent Clay Jordan expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service, acknowledging the determination shown in the search for Calasanz. “I am extremely grateful for the coordination, support, and determination by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office and our NPS team,” he stated.

The search involved a range of resources including drones, dive teams, swift water teams, ground searches, and K9 units. Throughout July, multiple operations were carried out along the Kaweah River, utilizing a certified water K9 team from the California Office of Emergency Services, Sheriff’s aircraft, as well as underwater cameras and sonar technologies.

Both the National Park Service and Tulare County officials extended their sincerest condolences to Calasanz’s family. They also took this moment to remind the public about the inherent dangers of rivers, suggesting caution measures such as wearing life jackets and keeping children at a safe distance from water bodies.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of safety while enjoying nature, urging all park visitors to remain vigilant and prepared.
