An 82-year-old woman from Colorado, Karen Diamond, has tragically passed away due to injuries sustained in a Molotov cocktail attack during a demonstration in support of Israeli hostages in Gaza. The incident occurred on June 1 in downtown Boulder, where Diamond was one of 29 victims involved in the attack, which resulted in 13 physical injuries. Prosecutors confirmed her death on June 25, highlighting the profound loss felt by the community.

Mohamed Sabry Soliman, the alleged perpetrator, is facing numerous charges including attempted first-degree murder and animal cruelty, as a dog was also injured in the incident. With Diamond’s death, these charges are expected to escalate to first-degree murder. Soliman has not yet been arraigned on the new charges and has a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 15. In addition, he has been indicted on federal hate crime charges, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Local leaders, including Boulder Jewish Community Center’s executive director and board chair, expressed their condolences, describing Diamond as a valued member of the community whose kindness left an indelible mark on those who knew her. Colorado Governor Jared Polis also extended his sympathy, stating the community would come together to support Diamond’s family and all victims of the attack.

The attack was reportedly premeditated, as Soliman disguised himself to approach the demonstrators, where he threw Molotov cocktails while shouting political slogans. Investigators believe the victims were targeted due to their perceived national origin, although motivations based solely on political views do not classify as hate crimes under federal law.

This incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of public expression and the critical importance of community solidarity in response to acts of violence and hatred. Such unprovoked attacks highlight a growing need for protective measures during demonstrations and a collective commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding, irrespective of differing political views.
