Three Palm Beach County deputies who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty last year were posthumously honored by President Donald Trump with the nation’s inaugural Medals of Sacrifice. During a heartfelt ceremony, he recognized the dedication and bravery of Corporal Luis Paez, Deputy Sheriff Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, and Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller, who were struck and killed while performing their duties near Southern Boulevard in Loxahatchee.

President Trump reflected on the close camaraderie shared by the officers, stating, “They dedicated their lives to protecting the people of Palm Beach County and well beyond. They were beloved by everyone and respected by all.” He emphasized the profound impact of their loss on the community and the state, noting, “This was a terrible tragedy… All of Florida mourned their loss.”

On the day of the incident, the deputies were involved in traffic enforcement when a wayward SUV struck them as they attempted to start one of their motorcycles. The somber event was attended by Florida Congress members Brian Mast and Byron Donalds, who expressed gratitude for the new award that honors the sacrifices made by first responders. Mast remarked, “That’s never taken place before… there’s a debt that can never be repaid.”

In a broader commitment to honoring law enforcement, President Trump shared that his administration would advocate for legislation to formally establish the Medal of Sacrifice for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

This recognition serves not only to honor these fallen heroes but also underscores the crucial role and inherent dangers faced by first responders in their commitment to public safety. It is a poignant reminder of the bravery exhibited by law enforcement officers every day, as they work tirelessly to protect their communities.
