Nell Smith, the promising young Canadian singer-songwriter renowned for her collaboration with The Flaming Lips, tragically passed away at the age of 17. Her family confirmed the news on Instagram, stating that their “feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us” on October 5.
The family expressed their devastation, saying, “We are reeling from the news and don’t know what to do or say. She had so much more to experience and to give this world, but we are grateful that she got to experience so very much in her 17 years. She has left an indelible mark on the world and an unfillable chasm in our hearts.” They urged others to “hold your kids extra tight” during this difficult time.
At a concert on October 6, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne shared the heartbreaking news with fans, revealing that Nell had been involved in a car accident. He reflected on their connection, saying, “We recorded an amazing album with her three years ago … it is always great to meet excited, young creative people. With Nell, we could see she is on a journey and thought it would be fun to join her for a while.”
Nell was looking forward to the release of her debut solo album in 2025, which had already received support from a successful Kickstarter campaign. Simon Raymonde, the head of her label Bella Union, expressed deep sorrow over her unexpected passing, remarking on the shock and devastation felt by all who knew her.
Nell’s remarkable relationship with The Flaming Lips began in 2018 when she attended one of their concerts in a parrot costume, capturing Coyne’s attention. This led to a mentorship where Coyne encouraged her musical aspirations. Their collaboration blossomed during the pandemic, resulting in the album “Where the Viaduct Looms,” featuring her unique covers of Nick Cave songs. Nick Cave himself praised her interpretation, highlighting her exceptional understanding and emotional depth.
Nell’s creative journey, though short-lived, was marked by passion and individuality, making her a notable figure in the indie music scene. Her passing occurs amidst another distressing situation for The Flaming Lips family, as band member Steven Drozd is currently facing the disappearance of his 16-year-old daughter, Charlotte “Bowie” Drozd.
Anyone with information regarding Charlotte is urged to contact the Seattle Police Department or reach out to her mother for assistance.
