Tragic Loss: Rising Star Nell Smith Leaves a Musical Legacy at Just 17

Nell Smith, a talented young Canadian singer known for her collaboration with the Flaming Lips, has passed away at the age of 17. Her family shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, stating, “It pains us so much to say that our feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter was cruelly taken from us on Saturday night.” They expressed their sorrow and disbelief, emphasizing her potential and the significant impact she made in her short life.

The family urged others to cherish their children, asking for privacy as they navigate their grief. While the cause of her death has not been confirmed, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne indicated during a concert in Portland that Smith died in a car accident. His announcement brought attention to the tragedy and the influence of music in their lives.

Simon Raymonde, head of the Bella Union record label set to release Smith’s debut album in 2025, expressed his devastation over her passing, calling her a dear friend. Raymonde highlighted that Smith was in the final stages of preparing for her first solo record, which was recorded in Brighton, collaborating with artists Jack and Lily Wolter from Penelope Isles.

Smith had a special connection with the Flaming Lips, having first met Coyne at a concert when she was 12. She later contributed to the band’s cover album, “Where the Viaduct Looms,” showcasing her vocal talent. Notably, Nick Cave praised her cover of his song “Girl in Amber,” commending her deep understanding and emotional delivery.

In an effort to support her music career, Smith launched a Kickstarter campaign last year that exceeded its goal, raising over $17,000 for her debut album. She expressed excitement about bringing her songs to life and aimed to use the proceeds for her dream of attending music school in the UK.
