Tragic Loss: Rising Star Nell Smith Dies at 17

Nell Smith, the talented young Canadian singer-songwriter known for her collaboration with The Flaming Lips, has tragically passed away at the age of 17. Her family confirmed her death on October 5 in a heartfelt statement on Instagram, expressing their deep grief over the loss of their “feisty, talented, unique, beautiful daughter.”

In their message, they reflected on the impact Nell had made in her short life, acknowledging the joy she brought to the world and the void her absence has created in their hearts. “We are reeling from the news and don’t know what to do or say,” they wrote, asking for privacy during this difficult time.

The news was shared with fans during a Flaming Lips concert on October 6, where lead singer Wayne Coyne revealed that Nell had died in a car accident. He recalled their special connection, which began when she attended a Flaming Lips concert at the age of 12 dressed in a parrot costume, thus starting a friendship that led to musical collaboration.

Nell was working on her debut solo album, expected to be released in 2025, with strong support from a successful Kickstarter campaign. Simon Raymonde of Bella Union, her record label, expressed his sorrow on social media, stating that they were all “shocked and devastated” by the news.

Nell’s collaboration with The Flaming Lips yielded the album “Where the Viaduct Looms,” which featured her unique interpretations of Nick Cave songs. The project arose during the pandemic when Coyne encouraged her to explore her musical talents.

Nick Cave himself praised her rendition of his song “Girl in Amber,” noting her remarkable understanding and unique approach to the material. He expressed his admiration for her work, calling himself a fan.

Nell’s passing is especially poignant for The Flaming Lips, as the band’s member Steven Drozd is currently facing the distressing situation of his own missing daughter, 16-year-old Charlotte “Bowie” Drozd, who has not been located since Saturday morning.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on Bowie to reach out to the Seattle Police Department or her mother, Becky.
