Princeton Athletics and the football program are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Martin “Tiger” Bech ’21, who lost his life in an attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday morning.
Bob Surace, the Charles W. Caldwell Jr. ’25 Head Coach of Football, expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating, “There was no more appropriate nickname for a Princeton player I coached. He was a ‘Tiger’ in every way – a fierce competitor with boundless energy, a cherished teammate, and a caring friend. Our last conversation revolved around my pride in the growth he exhibited during his time at Princeton and the successes he has achieved since graduation. My thoughts are with the entire Bech family during this difficult time.”
Bech was integral to the 2016 and 2018 Ivy League Championship teams and earned two All-Ivy honors as a return specialist. Notably, he was named to the second team during Princeton’s first perfect season since 1964 in 2018. Throughout his time at Princeton, he made significant contributions as a wide receiver, recording 53 receptions for 825 yards and three touchdowns.
