Holden Trent, the 25-year-old goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, passed away on Saturday, as confirmed by the Major League Soccer club.

The team has chosen not to disclose further details out of respect for Trent’s family and friends. In a statement, the Philadelphia Union expressed their devastation over his untimely death. “He was not only a talented player and fierce competitor, but also a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who elevated those around him,” the statement read. “He embodied determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be profoundly missed. We offer our deepest sympathies to his family, fiancé, and friends.”

Major League Soccer also issued a statement on X, expressing condolences. “MLS stands with the Philadelphia Union and the broader soccer community in mourning the tragic loss of Holden Trent. A promising goalkeeper with a bright future, he displayed unwavering determination and professionalism while contributing to the tight-knit goalkeeping squad at Philadelphia.”

The league mentioned that it is working with the Union to ensure players and family members are provided with necessary support during this difficult time.

Trent, originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, was drafted by the Union as the 28th overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, coming from High Point University. Although he had not yet made his first-team debut, he did appear in six matches for the Union’s second team in MLS Next Pro.
