Holden Trent, the goalkeeper for the Philadelphia Union, passed away on Saturday at the age of 25, as confirmed by the Major League Soccer team.
The club has stated that it will refrain from sharing further details to honor Trent’s friends and family.
“The Philadelphia Union is heartbroken by the tragic loss of Holden Trent,” the team said in a statement. “He was not just a talented player and fierce competitor but also a dedicated son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who uplifted those around him.
“Trent exemplified determination, dedication, and perseverance, and his absence will be profoundly felt. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, fiancée, and friends.”
Major League Soccer also issued a statement on social media, expressing their sorrow over Trent’s untimely passing. “MLS stands with the Philadelphia Union and the wider soccer community in mourning the loss of goalkeeper Holden Trent. A promising young talent, Trent demonstrated determination and professionalism every day as part of Philadelphia’s goalkeeping unit.
“Our deepest sympathies go to his fiancée, family, friends, teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is working with the club to ensure players and families have access to necessary support during this difficult time.”
Originally from Greensboro, North Carolina, Trent was drafted No. 28 overall by the Union during the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, coming from High Point University. Although he had not yet made his debut with the first team, he appeared six times for the Union’s second team in MLS Next Pro.
