Luis Guevara, a 19-year-old infielder in the Baltimore Orioles’ minor league system, tragically died after a head-on jet ski collision in Lido Key this past Sunday. The Orioles confirmed Guevara’s passing and described him as “a beloved member of our organization.”
The incident, which involved two jet skis with four people aboard, occurred just after 8 p.m. near South Lido Beach. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the crash sent all riders into the water. Guevara sustained severe internal and brain trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Another injured individual, Keiver Jose Guillen Reatiga, suffered facial fractures and lung injuries.
Guevara, who hailed from Venezuela, signed with the Orioles in January 2023 and made his U.S. debut this season, playing 30 games across the minor leagues. His journey with the Orioles began in the Dominican Summer League, and he was highly regarded by his teammates and the organization.
After the collision, the Sarasota Police Department arrived to find chaotic scenes with concerned bystanders. Witnesses reported that the riders involved in the crash had attempted to flee the scene in another jet ski but were later located by authorities. Officers were able to secure the crash site and gather accounts from all those involved for their ongoing investigation.
In light of the tragedy, the Orioles postponed games scheduled for Monday and Tuesday as the team mourned the loss of a promising young player. Orioles general manager Mike Elias expressed deep sorrow for Guevara’s family and teammates, emphasizing the impact he had on the team.
The FWC has extended its condolences and will continue to investigate the incident further. This unfortunate event highlights the importance of safety precautions while participating in water sports, urging riders to remain vigilant at all times.
Comments: The loss of Luis Guevara is not only a tragedy for his family and friends but also for the entire baseball community. As we reflect on this incident, let it serve as a reminder of the importance of safety measures while enjoying recreational activities.
