A tragic incident unfolded at Mount Rinjani on Lombok Island, Indonesia, where a Brazilian tourist, 26-year-old Juliana Marins, was discovered dead following a days-long search and rescue operation. Marins went missing after falling into a ravine on Saturday, prompting extensive efforts from Indonesian authorities hampered by severe weather conditions and challenging terrain.

The Brazilian government confirmed her death, expressing profound sadness over the loss. In a statement from the Brazilian foreign ministry, officials noted, “The Brazilian government informs, with deep sadness, the death of the Brazilian tourist Juliana Marins, who had fallen from a cliff surrounding the trail near the crater of Mount Rinjani.” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva also expressed his condolences, stating that their diplomatic services in Indonesia would continue to support her family during this painful time.

Rescue efforts faced significant obstacles due to the adverse weather and visibility challenges in the area. The head of Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency, Mohammad Syafii, reported that rescuers were able to locate Marins’ body using a drone. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection by the rescue team, it was confirmed that she had not survived after falling approximately 600 meters.

Updates from Marins’ Instagram account reflected the heartfelt support she received during the search, with the family thanking followers for their prayers and messages. Prior to her tragic accident, Marins had been capturing her travels through Southeast Asia, having shared her adventures in Thailand and Vietnam on social media.

Lombok Island, recognized for its stunning scenery, remains a popular destination for hikers, particularly on Mount Rinjani, which is renowned for its breathtaking views. However, the mountain has its risks, as highlighted by a significant incident in 2018 when a powerful earthquake led to widespread landslides, stranding many climbers and resulting in multiple fatalities.

This unfortunate event serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of nature and the inherent risks associated with outdoor adventures. The community continues to send support to Marins’ family during this difficult time, wishing them strength in their mourning.
