Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has tragically passed away after being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who allegedly doused her in petrol and set her ablaze. The incident occurred shortly after Cheptegei returned home from church with her two daughters in north-west Kenya, where she lived and trained. She sustained severe burns, which led to her death days later.
Cheptegei’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, expressed his sorrow over losing a supportive daughter, while fellow athlete James Kirwa recounted her kindness and assistance to other runners. The authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack, which reportedly stemmed from a dispute over a piece of land.
Gender-based violence remains a significant issue in Kenya, with a national survey indicating that in 2022, over a third of women reported experiencing physical violence. Sports Minister Kipchumba Murkomen emphasized the need to address these issues, and the United Nations has condemned the violence against Cheptegei, reinforcing calls for justice.
Mr. Cheptegei urged the Kenyan government to ensure that justice is served following his daughter’s death. Medical staff at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital confirmed that Cheptegei had suffered extensive burns, leading to multi-organ failure before she succumbed.
Cheptegei was noted for her achievements in athletics, including winning gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Thailand in 2022.
