Tragic Loss: NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Killed in Accident

NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother tragically lost their lives in a car accident in New Jersey on Thursday night.

The Columbus Blue Jackets forward, aged 31, and his younger brother Matthew, 29, were cycling on a rural road in Oldsman Township when they were struck by a vehicle, as reported by New Jersey police.

The driver, 43-year-old Sean Higgins, has been arrested and faces two charges of death by auto. He is currently being held without bail at the Salem County Correctional Facility.

The Columbus Blue Jackets expressed their sorrow in a statement, describing the incident as an “unimaginable tragedy.” They highlighted that Johnny was not only an exceptional hockey player but also a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend.

The family expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support in a statement on Facebook, acknowledging the messages of empathy and prayers they have received.

Matthew Gaudreau was also involved in professional hockey, having played for the Reading Royals in Pennsylvania. The brothers were in New Jersey to serve as groomsmen at their sister’s wedding in Philadelphia, which was scheduled for Friday.

According to police, Higgins hit the Gaudreau brothers from behind while trying to overtake two other vehicles. He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Known as “Johnny Hockey,” Gaudreau had an impressive 11-year NHL career, scoring 243 goals. He joined the Blue Jackets in 2022 after previously playing with the Calgary Flames.

The Columbus Blue Jackets praised Gaudreau for playing the game with joy, noting that he entertained fans in a unique way. NHL executive Brian Burke reflected on Gaudreau’s character, stating that he radiated kindness in the locker room and that few players possessed his passion and love for the game.
