Jeff Baena, an acclaimed indie film director and writer known for his collaboration with wife Aubrey Plaza, has tragically passed away at the age of 47. His death occurred on Friday in his Los Angeles residence, and while law enforcement sources indicated it was a suicide, the official cause has not yet been released by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.

Baena gained prominence as he co-wrote the critically acclaimed film “I Heart Huckabees” in 2004, which followed two detectives on a quest to decipher a series of peculiar coincidences. Baena subsequently made his mark as a director with his debut film, “Life After Beth” (2014), a comedy-horror that starred Plaza and premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, earning a nomination for the Grand Jury Prize. He continued to collaborate with Plaza on several successful projects including “The Little Hours” (2017) and “Spin Me Round” (2022), both showcasing his unique storytelling style and ability to blend genres.

Beyond his film achievements, Baena also created the Showtime anthology series “Cinema Toast,” which innovatively combined public domain movie footage with new content. Born in Miami and raised in a family with creative influences, Baena graduated from New York University Film School and worked his way into the industry starting as a production assistant before establishing himself as a notable director and writer.

Baena and Plaza celebrated a decade together by marrying during the pandemic in 2020, a union that reflected their strong partnership both personally and professionally. He is survived by Plaza and other family members, including his mother and father.

While this news brings a somber cloud over the film community, many will continue to cherish Baena’s cinematic contributions and the indelible marks he made through his creative endeavors. His works will serve as a legacy for aspiring filmmakers and audiences alike, reminding us of the importance of mental health awareness in the industry.
