Former Sheffield United defender George Baldock has tragically passed away at the age of 31 at his home in Athens, Greece. Baldock recently joined Greek club Panathinaikos after spending seven years at Sheffield United.
Sheffield United expressed their shock and grief over Baldock’s death, stating, “The defender left the club in the summer after seven years at Bramall Lane and was extremely popular with supporters, staff, and teammates.” The club extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
Baldock joined Sheffield United from MK Dons in 2017, where he made over 200 appearances and achieved two promotions to the Premier League in 2019 and 2023. He played every match during the 2019-2020 season under manager Chris Wilder, contributing to the club’s best-ever Premier League finish of ninth place.
Brighton & Hove Albion, where Baldock’s brother Sam serves as a pathway development coach, added their condolences to the family during this difficult time.
Beginning his career at MK Dons, Baldock also had loan experiences with Northampton Town, Tamworth, and Oxford United before securing a permanent move to Sheffield United. After missing the first three matches of the season at Panathinaikos due to injury, he recently played 75 minutes in a goalless draw against Olympiacos.
Baldock, born in Buckinghamshire, qualified to represent Greece through his grandmother and earned 12 caps for the national team. Greece is set to face England at Wembley on Thursday in the Nations League. The England team expressed their sadness over Baldock’s passing, emphasizing the close ties he had with many players.
Baldock’s last international appearance occurred in March during a Euro 2024 play-off against Georgia, where Greece was eliminated in a penalty shootout.
