Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, whose real name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, has passed away at the age of 34. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death to local media outlets.
News of the rapper’s death spread rapidly across social media on Thursday afternoon, with Thugger Daily being one of the first to report it. According to TMZ, Lamar’s family revealed that he died at his home on Thursday, and a 911 call made by his girlfriend, Amber Williams, was later released. In the call, Williams stated that she found Lamar unresponsive on a couch after dropping their son off at school.
While multiple reports suggest that Lamar’s death may have been due to a drug overdose, this information has not yet been confirmed. An autopsy is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 6.
Rich Homie Quan started his music career in 2011, gaining widespread attention with his hit “Type of Way” in 2013. His single “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” released in 2015 also garnered significant acclaim. Over the years, he received nominations for several BET Hip Hop Awards, including Best New Artist, and was nominated for iHeartRadio Music Awards’ Hip Hop Song of the Year in 2016.
He collaborated frequently with artists such as Young Thug, 2 Chainz, and Jacquees, and was part of the Cash Money Records project “Rich Gang.” Born in Atlanta, Lamar had aspirations of becoming a professional baseball player while attending Ronald McNair Sr. High School and briefly attended Fort Valley State University before dropping out due to financial issues.
Rich Homie Quan was set to perform on September 19 alongside Nick Cannon, Waka Flocka, Lil Boosie, and others.
During the ongoing YSL RICO trial, former key witness Kenneth “Lil Woody” Copeland mentioned that he and a friend were responsible for the shooting of Lamar’s father at his barbershop in 2014, although he asserted that Young Thug had no connection to the incident. The rapport between Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug had deteriorated over the years, which was acknowledged during trial proceedings.
In 2017, Lamar faced legal troubles when he was stopped by police in Louisville, Georgia, where authorities discovered multiple drugs in his vehicle. However, the case was later dismissed.
