Atlanta rapper Rich Homie Quan, who gained fame in 2013, has passed away in Georgia, according to authorities. The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta notified them of the rapper’s death on Thursday. He was 33 years old.
Details surrounding the cause and manner of death have not yet been disclosed, but an autopsy is scheduled for Friday, the medical examiner’s office reported. Born Dequantes Devontay Lamar, Rich Homie Quan achieved significant success more than a decade ago with his hit song “Type of Way,” followed by the popular track “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015.
Rapper Boosie Badazz expressed his sorrow over the loss of his friend on social media, recalling the “GOOD ASS MEMORIES TOGETHER” they shared, and stated that their collaboration was in progress before Quan’s passing.
Rich Homie Quan’s family and management have not responded to requests for comment as of Thursday afternoon. Additionally, former Michigan State University head football coach Mark Dantonio shared a memory on X, posting a photo of himself with Quan after his team won the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2014. The song “Type of Way” became the team’s celebratory anthem that season.
“RIP @RichHomieQuan Special Time, Special Place with Special People,” Dantonio wrote, finishing the post with a praying hands emoji. In the same year, Rich Homie Quan was included in XXL magazine’s first Freshman Class, alongside other artists like Chance the Rapper and Ty Dolla $ign.
Throughout his career, he received nominations for several BET and BET Hip Hop Awards, including best new artist and people’s champ award. He also collaborated with notable artists in the industry such as 2 Chainz, Young Thug, Gucci Mane, and Trinidad James.
