Sondra Williams, the wife of San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Trent Williams, shared devastating news on Monday, revealing that the couple’s son, Trenton Jr., was stillborn on November 24, 2023. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Sondra conveyed her grief, noting that Trenton Jr. was stillborn after 35 weeks of pregnancy and that they had also lost Trenton’s twin earlier. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to bond with her son and hold him before his passing, while also finding solace in the belief that he will not suffer.
Trenton Jr. had been diagnosed with trisomy 13, a severe chromosomal disorder that presents significant challenges, including intellectual disabilities and various physical abnormalities. Sadly, many cases of trisomy 13 result in miscarriage or early infant mortality.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged the depth of the tragedy, confirming that Trent Williams had been by Sondra’s side during this time. He shared the emotional strain the family is facing as they navigate their loss. “It’s hard as a coach and as a friend,” Shanahan remarked. “But we spend a lot of time with each other. That’s what’s great about a football team; we go through everything together.”
This news comes amidst another heart-wrenching situation for the organization; cornerback Charvarius Ward had also recently dealt with the loss of his 1-year-old daughter, Amani Joy. As the team rallies together, Shanahan emphasized the support network available to the Williams family during their mourning period.
This situation shines a light on the importance of community support during difficult times. The solidarity shown by teammates and coaching staff to Trent Williams and his family reflects the close-knit nature of the 49ers organization. While tragedy has struck, the unity and compassion evident within the team offer a source of strength as they process their grief collectively.
