RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Police Department is currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred on Saturday morning, resulting in two men sustaining serious injuries.
Officers responded to a call for a domestic disturbance on East Grace Street shortly after 10 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two men suffering from serious wounds. According to police reports, a 19-year-old male was involved in a confrontation with an adult female on the sidewalk near an apartment building. During the altercation, the situation escalated, prompting calls to 911 regarding the violent domestic dispute. A 35-year-old man, who was passing by walking his dog, attempted to intervene when the younger man pulled out a firearm from his backpack and shot him before turning the gun on himself.
Both individuals were transported to a local hospital, where they are being treated for life-threatening injuries. Responding officers arrived on the scene within three and a half minutes of the initial call.
In a notable update, the dog involved in the incident was taken to Richmond Animal Care and Control but has since been returned to a family member.
Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards expressed his concern regarding the incident, calling it a “tragic story of gun violence” and emphasizing the importance of community efforts to combat such violence. He highlighted that the 35-year-old man was merely trying to diffuse a troubling situation.
