Dallas police have named Corey Cobb-Bey as the suspect involved in the fatal shooting of Officer Darron Burks and the injury of two other officers on Thursday night. Authorities allege that 30-year-old Cobb-Bey “executed” Officer Burks, who was 46 years old, while he was inside his marked police vehicle parked outside the nonprofit For Oak Cliff. There is no evidence suggesting that Burks and Cobb-Bey were previously acquainted.
Police confirmed that all firearms owned by Cobb-Bey were purchased legally. Footage from body cameras and dash cameras related to the incident is set to be released next week.
Cobb-Bey has attracted attention on social media, identifying himself as a Moorish American National, a group that views itself as sovereign and not subject to U.S. laws. Dallas Police have noted that Cobb-Bey made several alarming posts online. In videos, he can be seen approaching police officers and questioning them about their activities and presence in specific locations. He had also indicated plans for a certain event on social media.
Regarding his criminal history, records indicate that Cobb-Bey does not have a history of violent offenses. In 2017, he was charged with providing false information to law enforcement after a traffic stop related to an expired registration. During that interaction, he allegedly gave officers the name “Coremour Bey” and refused to disclose his birthdate, claiming it was private information, leading to his arrest for traffic violations. A subsequent check of an FBI database linked officers to Cobb.
