Peanut, the Instagram-famed squirrel, has been euthanized by New York authorities following an incident where he bit a state official during a seizure operation. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) had raided the home of Mark Longo due to complaints regarding potentially unsafe living conditions for the animal. Alongside Peanut’s unfortunate end, authorities also reported the euthanasia of another animal, a raccoon named Fred, taken during the raid.

Mr. Longo, who has been an ardent advocate for Peanut, expressed his despair on social media, declaring that there was a “special place in hell” for the DEC and pleading for Peanut’s return. Just days prior to the animal’s death, a petition demanding his release had gained significant traction, amassing over 30,000 signatures.

In an attempt to fund legal costs against the DEC, Mr. Longo initiated a GoFundMe campaign that raised approximately $13,500. He described the situation as a “terrible nightmare” and used his social media platform to rally support, even sharing contact information for the DEC in a call to action for his followers to express their feelings.

The DEC’s investigation into Mr. Longo’s housing practices began after receiving multiple reports about wildlife safety concerns, including potential rabies risks associated with keeping wild animals as pets. Seven years ago, Mr. Longo found Peanut as a baby, abandoned after his mother was killed, and had since cared for him. Peanut’s Instagram account, which boasts over 500,000 followers, features lighthearted content of the playful squirrel including skits with Mr. Longo, often clad in hats and enjoying waffles.

While this incident marks a tragic chapter in the life of the beloved Peanut, it has sparked a larger conversation about wildlife rehabilitation and the responsibilities of pet ownership, potentially leading to more awareness and better practices for animal care.

In summary, although the loss of Peanut is deeply felt, it has united a community of supporters and may prompt a deeper look into animal welfare practices moving forward.
