A bison tragically lost its life at Yellowstone National Park after it fell into a hot spring while wandering near the Grand Prismatic Spring on June 21. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the animal attempt to maneuver away from the water’s edge, ultimately stumbling into dangerously hot temperatures that can reach up to 192 degrees Fahrenheit.
Louise Howard, a visitor from Colorado, witnessed the incident and expressed her distress on social media. She described how the bison tried to escape but was unsuccessful, stating, “As hard as it tried, it couldn’t get out.” Howard documented the experience with photos and noted that the bison’s struggle was heartbreaking to watch.
Michael Poland, the scientist-in-charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, provided further context, explaining that the bison likely succumbed to boiling temperatures very quickly. He stated that such events, although unfortunate, are not entirely uncommon; animals can sometimes underestimate the dangers posed by the hot springs and nearby crust, which can be fragile.
Katie Hirtzel, another park visitor, reflected on the scene she observed hours later, describing it as “quiet” and “eerie.” She felt a sense of beauty in the raw power of nature, noting that witnessing such events reminds visitors of the natural cycle of life. As such, she hopes park rangers will allow the bison’s remains to remain in place as part of this cycle.
Park officials typically allow the remains of deceased animals to decay naturally in the wild, allowing scavengers and the environment to reclaim the remains over time. Poland emphasized the importance of respecting the wildlife and following park rules to ensure safety in this wild environment.
