Officer Duarte, a member of the West York Borough Police Department who joined in 2022 after five years with the Denver Police Department, was remembered as a veteran law enforcer and a recipient of a hero award from Mothers Against Drunk Driving. The other injured individuals—a doctor, a nurse, and a custodian—are reported to be in stable condition. Authorities, including York County Office of Emergency Management spokesperson Ted Czech, confirmed that police responded to an active threat at the hospital, which was subsequently neutralized. UPMC assured the public that no patients had been harmed and the hospital was secure.
