A tragic incident unfolded at a West Valley festival, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including an 8-month-old infant. The West Valley City Police Department reported that five people were shot at Centennial Park during WestFest, an annual celebration, on Sunday night. Among the fatalities, an 18-year-old male was involved in the violent exchange, while the 41-year-old woman and the infant were innocent bystanders.
The suspect, a 16-year-old male, has been taken into custody. The chaos erupted around 9:20 p.m. when a verbal altercation escalated between two groups. As police attempted to intervene, the suspect drew a firearm and opened fire. An officer present at the scene returned fire but did not hit the assailant.
In addition to the deceased, two other teenage victims, a 17-year-old female and a 15-year-old male, suffered injuries to their arms. Authorities are currently investigating whether these teens were connected to the altercation.
As a precaution, the Utah Department of Transportation has closed off a section of northbound 5600 W at 3500 S to facilitate a thorough investigation into the shooting.
