Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed in a targeted attack early Wednesday morning in midtown Manhattan. This incident occurred just before Thompson was set to speak at the company’s 2024 investor conference, held at the Hilton Hotel, where the attack took place.
The shooting occurred around 6:45 a.m. near West 54th Street and 6th Avenue. Thompson, 50, was attacked by a masked gunman, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Roosevelt Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, according to the NYPD.
In the wake of this event, UnitedHealthcare announced the cancellation of the investor conference, during which executives were scheduled to present. Andrew Witty, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, addressed attendees, acknowledging the seriousness of the situation, and stated, “Brian was a highly respected colleague and friend to all who worked with him.”
UnitedHealthcare expressed deep condolences in a public statement, highlighting Thompson’s reputation as a respected leader and friend. The company is collaborating with the police to navigate the aftermath of this shocking incident.
Thompson’s wife, Paulette, mentioned that her husband had received threats prior to the shooting, indicating that the situation leading up to his death may have been dire.
Before becoming CEO in April 2021, Thompson led UnitedHealthcare’s government programs and had an extensive tenure within the company since 2004. He was well-regarded in his field, having previously worked as a CPA at PricewaterhouseCoopers and graduating as valedictorian from the University of Iowa.
Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota described Thompson’s death as “horrifying” and a significant loss to both the business and healthcare sectors.
While authorities have asserted that the shooting was targeted, they have not provided a motive nor identified any suspects. The suspect, described as a 6-foot tall man with a slim build, was seen wearing a cream-colored jacket, black gloves, and a mask, and is believed to have fled the scene on a bicycle. Police are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
This tragic loss has cast a somber shadow over the UnitedHealthcare community as they mourn a respected leader. The ongoing investigation serves as a reminder of the need for increased security and vigilance in our society. As the search for the suspect continues, the hope remains that justice will be served and the circumstances surrounding this event will be resolved effectively.
