UnitedHealth confirmed the heartbreaking passing of Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in a statement released on Wednesday afternoon. The message expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Thompson, describing him as a respected colleague and a cherished friend within the company. UnitedHealth emphasized that they are cooperating with the New York Police Department while seeking understanding and patience as they navigate this tragic event.

On the morning of December 4, 2024, Thompson was fatally shot outside a Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan just before the company’s annual investor conference. Witnesses reported that a masked assailant, who appeared to have been waiting for Thompson, opened fire multiple times around 6:40 a.m. ET. The 50-year-old executive was critically injured, sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest, and was transported to Mt. Sinai hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Although the NYPD has confirmed details of the incident, they have refrained from naming Thompson as the victim until his family was notified. Currently, there have been no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.

UnitedHealth’s investor conference, set to showcase the company’s future plans, was abruptly concluded early at approximately 9:10 a.m. ET due to the situation involving Thompson. CEO Andrew Witty informed attendees of the serious medical emergency affecting a key team member.

Brian Thompson had a long-standing career with UnitedHealth, dating back to 2004, where he took on various leadership roles in insurance and finance, ultimately becoming CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.

As the company and the healthcare industry mourn the loss of a dedicated leader, this tragic incident highlights the broader concerns around gun violence, urging an introspection about safety in public spaces.

While the circumstances surrounding Thompson’s death are unfortunate, his legacy in transforming healthcare strategies and his commitment to serving the community will continue to be remembered. In the face of such personal and corporate tragedy, it is essential to honor his memory by striving for a safer environment for all.
