Tragedy Strikes: Teenager Killed in Shooting Outside Michigan State Fair

A tragic shooting incident occurred outside the Michigan State Fair in Novi, Michigan, on Saturday evening, resulting in the death of one teenager and injuries to another. The shooting took place at approximately 10 p.m. in a parking lot near Grand River Avenue, prompting police to respond to reports of gunfire in the area southwest of the Suburban Collection Showplace.

According to the Novi police, both victims are 14-year-old boys. Currently, there is no suspect in custody, but authorities believe the shooting was targeted. Details regarding the suspect have not been released.

Investigators revealed that the two boys had traveled by Uber from Detroit to Farmington Hills and then to the fair with some friends. They suspect the shooting may have resulted from an ongoing argument involving the teens that had persisted throughout the week.

Witnesses at the scene recounted the chaotic moments, describing how they heard gunshots and began to flee for safety. “We’re all trying to run, duck off somewhere,” stated one witness.

In response to the incident, the Novi Police Department confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the community. They are actively investigating what is described as an isolated incident. One victim was transported to a local hospital but tragically succumbed to injuries.

Organizers of the Michigan State Fair expressed their condolences, stating, “There was an incident that occurred last night outside the perimeter of the Michigan State Fair involving an isolated shooting resulting from an altercation.” They emphasized their commitment to guest safety, noting that enhanced safety measures, including weapons detection systems and increased police presence, were already in place.

Following a review of the incident, further safety measures will be implemented. The fair will adjust its hours, closing the Box Office and entry at 6:00 p.m. and shutting down the fairgrounds at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Additionally, any attendees under 18 years old will need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to enter the fair.

The Michigan State Fair remains dedicated to honoring its agricultural and livestock community and continuing the tradition of the event. Those seeking refunds who have not yet scanned their tickets are encouraged to reach out to the Michigan State Fair for assistance.
