A tragic accident occurred on Interstate 40 West in Claremont, leading to the death of a 22-year-old woman during severe storms that impacted the Charlotte region on Friday night. Gabriella Elise Cruz from Bryson City died at the scene after her SUV was involved in a collision with another SUV around 7 p.m.

The second driver sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the scene, as did three passengers in her vehicle. Authorities are currently investigating the details surrounding the crash, with “possible charges pending” as they consult with the Catawba County District Attorney’s office. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the N.C. State Highway Patrol at 828-466-5500.

As a result of the storm, approximately 3,000 customers in Mecklenburg County and surrounding areas were left without power on Saturday morning, down from a peak of at least 18,000 Friday night. Duke Energy reports that full restoration might not occur until 10 p.m. Saturday.

Moreover, the severe weather caused significant disruptions to local air travel, with more than 500 flights delayed at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Friday night. While operations returned to normal Saturday morning, challenges persisted with 250 delays and 37 cancellations reported by 5 p.m.

This unfortunate event underscores the importance of safe driving practices during adverse weather conditions. It also reflects the community’s resilience, as emergency services worked swiftly to provide assistance both at the accident scene and to restore power to affected areas.
