Tragedy struck the world of soccer as Ecuadorian and FC Cincinnati player Marco Angulo passed away from injuries sustained in a car crash that also claimed the life of his former youth teammate, Roberto Cabezas. This heartbreaking news was confirmed by the Ecuadorian Football Association on Tuesday.
Angulo, just 22 years old, was involved in the tragic incident on October 7, where the car he was a passenger in collided with a metal barrier on the Rumiñahui highway, located southeast of Quito. In addition to Angulo, the driver and Cabezas, who had played for Independiente Juniors, lost their lives in the crash.
Angulo suffered severe head injuries and a lung contusion, leading to him being placed in an artificial coma. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night, according to reports from local media, including El Universo.
Before his untimely passing, Angulo was loaned to L.D.U. Quito, champions of the Ecuadorian league, from Major League Soccer’s FC Cincinnati. In a heartfelt statement, FC Cincinnati expressed their sorrow, highlighting Angulo not just as a talented player but also as a loving husband, father, and cherished friend. The club described him as a joyful individual whose presence brightened every space he entered.

Notably, Marco Angulo’s accomplishments included representing Ecuador at both the Under-17 and Under-20 levels and making his senior debut in a friendly match against Iraq in November 2022, followed by another appearance against Australia in March 2023.
