Sophie Hediger, a prominent member of Switzerland’s national snowboard cross team, tragically lost her life on Monday due to an avalanche in the Swiss Alps. She was just 26 years old. The Swiss ski federation confirmed the news, expressing their deep sorrow over the loss of a talented athlete.
Hediger was well-known in the world of snowboard cross, a dynamic sport where multiple competitors race down a challenging course filled with jumps and turns. Her most recent appearance was just under two weeks ago when she competed in a World Cup event in Cervinia, Italy.
Earlier this year, Hediger achieved significant milestones in her career, including her first podium finish in January, where she placed second in a World Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Following that, she secured a third-place finish in another World Cup event held in Gudauri, Georgia.
During the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022, Hediger and her teammate Kalle Koblet showcased their skills by finishing seventh in the mixed team snowboard cross event, while Hediger also participated in the women’s race, finishing in 19th place.
