A tragic passenger plane crash near Aktau, Kazakhstan, has claimed the lives of at least 38 individuals. The incident involved an Embraer 190 aircraft operated by a local airline, which went down shortly after taking off from Baku, Azerbaijan, en route to Grozny, Russia.
As news of the crash spread, Azerbaijan declared a day of mourning for the victims. The flight carried a total of 62 passengers and five crew members, comprising citizens from Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.
The crash occurred approximately 3 kilometers from Aktau, along the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea. Preliminary reports suggest that the aircraft encountered an emergency due to a bird strike and was forced to reroute for an emergency landing owing to heavy fog in Grozny. Unfortunately, the plane crashed while approaching Aktau airport. Out of those on board, 32 survived, including two children, but many are reported to be in critical condition and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister confirmed the fatalities, while reports from the scene indicated that both pilots likely perished. President Aliyev of Azerbaijan noted the complexities around the crash, clarifying that a thorough investigation is now underway.
